  • - The goal is to replenish the sub-basin Aguanaval with 333 cubic meters per year through soil improvement.
  • - This project adds to the different initiatives the company has across the country to promote water resilience.

Torreón – Coahuila, August 20, 2024.- As part of its commitment to drive water security and create value along communities where Arca Continental operates, the second-largest Coca-Cola bottler in Latin America, the Mexico Coca-Cola System and the State Government of Coahuila, announced the investment of 18.8 million pesos for the water replenishment of the sub-basin “Aguanaval” (RH36Db).

The project will be executed in collaboration with Toroto, a company specializing in nature-based solutions management, consolidating the ecological restoration of water and oils in Comarca Lagunera. The goal is to replenish up to 333 thousand cubic meters of water per year into the Aguanaval sub-basin by improving the soil in the ejido “Barreal de Guadalupe”. Upon completion of the works, the region will have nearly one million additional cubic meters of water by the end of 2026.

The kickoff event was attended by: Susana Estens – Secretary of the Environment for the State of Coahuila, Roberto Muñoz – Chairman of the Nazas-Aguanaval Basin Council, and Eduardo Terrazas – General Manager of SIMAS (Municipal Water and Sanitation System).

“I am thrilled that we can generate interest from all institutions present here to maintain and support our communities, with what the UN summarizes as ‘nature-based solutions’ (…) People from the desert understand better than anyone how fragile our ecosystem is (…) I appreciate that you have taken the opportunity to carry out these actions in our region, not only for the economic impact of the work to be done, but also to leverage and capitalize on the joint effort to achieve the conservation of our environment (…) I congratulate Arca Continental and Coca-Cola for this privilege, for their presence, their investment, and for the benefits here in Jimulco.” –stated Susana Estens, Secretary of the Environment for the State of Coahuila.

The next step is the restoration of ecosystems alongside more communities in the area, with environmental and economic impacts that will boost the Laguna region across several benefit pillars. In this first phase, the plan is to intervene in 560 hectares using Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) and hydrological modeling with the SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) tool, which simulates water quality and quantity by evaluating parameters such as evapotranspiration, surface runoff, infiltration, and groundwater flow. Additionally, climate change scenarios will be analyzed to assess adaptation strategies in the RH36Db sub-basin.

“In Arca Continental, we are committed to sustainability and value creation for the communities where we operate. The launch of this program is a clear example of our commitment to guarantee a future where water, a vital resource, is available for everyone”. David Reyna Cantú – Director of the Northern Region for Arca Continental.

With actions like this and through strategic alliances along the private and public sectors, Arca Continental reinforces its commitment to water security by reducing, treating, and returning the equivalent of 100% of the water used in the production of our beverages, making a positive difference in the community.
