Guayaquil, Ecuador, February 18, 2020.-Arca Continental, one of the top Coca-Cola bottlers in the world, signed a Collaboration Agreement with the National Government of Ecuador to boost the use of returnable bottles and include more recycled content in the packaging it uses in the Galapagos.

Participants in the signing ceremony for the agreement included Otto Sonnenholzner, Vicepresident of the Republic of Ecuador; Raúl Ledesma, Minister of the Environment; Norman Wray, Minister President of the Government Council of the Special Regime in Galapagos; Alberto Andrade, leader of the Insular Front of the Maritime Reserve of Galapagos; Maribel Guerrero, representative of the Galapagos Chamber of Commerce; and Guillermo Adam, director, Arca Continental Ecuador.

The initiative complements other company programs aimed at promoting the circular economy model. These include the “Botella a Botella” program that fosters the recovery of PET bottles to produce new bottles and the inclusion of 25% recycled resin, as well as the program known as DAR—for Development, Environment, Recycling in Spanish—that strives to strengthen inclusive recycling and the comprehensive development of base recyclers.

“The goal of Arca Continental Ecuador is for 40% of its bottles in the sales mix to be returnable over the next five years, which would have a positive multiplying effect that invigorates the economy for store owners and the industry in Ecuador that supplies raw materials. This in turn creates more jobs”, explained Guillermo Adam, director, Arca Continental Ecuador.

Otto Sonnenholzner, Vicepresident of the Republic of Ecuador, emphasized the importance that programs such as these hold in conserving the environment, referencing the fact that the country “is home to 10% of the world’s biodiversity in less than 0.02%”.

Arca Continental promotes returnable packaging in every territory where it is present through several initiatives, including the interchangeable Universal Bottle that is available in Mexico, Argentina, Ecuador, and Peru. It participates in The Coca-Cola Company’s efforts to achieve a #WorldWithoutWaste, striving to recover and recycle the equivalent of 100% of its packaging and produce bottles that are 100% recyclable by 2030.

With efforts such as these, Arca Continental Ecuador ratifies its commitment to economic, environmental, and social development in the territories where it operates with the goal of achieving the sustainable growth of its companies.
